  6. In Vermeer's painting, we
  7. instantly identify the objects
  8. depicted. To create the
  9. impression of verisimilitude in
  10. the viewer, the artist followed
  11. the rules of perspective. He
  12. painted the vessel into which
  13. the woman is pouring liquid in
  14. the shape of an ellipse, and
  15. foreshortened the loaf of bread
  16. and the top of the table.  In
  17. fact, the actual shapes in
  18. which he painted the woman
  19. and all the other objects
  20. depended on where they were
  21. located in relation to him.
